Premiere for aluminium industry: ALUEXPO first international trade fair in Turkey
(headline and news from
www.alu-scout.com
)
With the support of TALSAD, the Turkish aluminium association, Hannover Messe is organising the
Aluexpo
trade fair in Istanbul from 15-18 October 2009 and will thus be celebrating a premiere: Aluexpo is the first international trade fair devoted to aluminium to be held in Turkey and the Eurasian economic zone. The fair will be held at the IDTM Istanbul Expo Center, with 5,000 square metres of exhibition space. The fair is thus also a pointer to the growth in aluminium production that has taken place in Turkey recently. The Eurasian aluminium industry now has a market volume of some three billion US dollars and the country’s exports are also quite impressive, which can be attributed to a significant improvement in Turkey’s competitiveness internationally. There has been a corresponding increase in the need for imports and this has increasingly made Turkey an important consumer market for the aluminium sector.
About 200 exhibitors will be taking the opportunity to exhibit at the fair. It will thus present a suitable platform to establish contacts in the Eurasian economic zone and profit from this future growth market. Turkey’s aluminium fair has already aroused the interest of various users from the car and aircraft industries, mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering and the packaging industry to participate.
Well-known companies such as
Drache Umwelttechnik GmbH
,
Diamant Metallplastic GmbH
or Momentive Performance Materials Quartz GmbH are also taking the opportunity to be at the premiere, as are up-and-coming major Turkish producers such as Assan Alüminyum, ETI Alüminyum or Cuhadaroglu Metal. In addition, important trade visitors from Europe and the Gulf States are expected.
Turkey’s economic development
The global recession has also affected Turkey with its hitherto positive economic situation, which has been characterised by promising growth in recent years. The per capita consumption of aluminium in 2007 was 6.5 kg, up from 2.8 kg in 2000. Assan Alüminyum, one of the countries most important aluminium producers, was able to report growth of 14% in its annual production in 2007 compared with the previous year and was focussing on the promising market development. However, in the meantime the Turkish economy has declined about 14% since the start of the crisis; private investments in particular have been cut back strongly and have fallen by about 36%.
In addition to these economic setbacks the country is also having to cope with high energy costs and a shortage of raw materials that makes it strongly dependent on imports. About 90% of the raw aluminium is imported because the country only has one smelter, Eti Alüminyum in Seydisehir (Konya province) with an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes. In 2007, approx. 570,000 tonnes of primary and secondary aluminium were imported together with about 22,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap. The collection and recycling of aluminium is not particularly productive because of the lack of a well-organised system. Nevertheless even during the financial crisis Turkish companies are optimistic, at least outwardly, and look forward with confidence to the development of their own domestic aluminium production. Thus many companies are continuing to rely on expanding their production and investing in research, modernisation and investment in new plant.
For example, Cuhadaroglu Holding invested in the modernisation of its production processes and range of services in 2008 but was still able to achieve growth in production of 15% in 2007. The company is optimistic and has announced its intention to increase the export share of its aluminium turnover to 50% by 2010. This positive mood despite the crisis and widespread hope for an upturn is also clearly apparent at Cansan Alüminyum, a producer of aluminium profiles based in Hasanaga (Bursa). It, too, is relying on an expansion of its plant and is planning to install a new foundry costing seven million US dollars this year to extend its product range and enable it to process semi-finished products in-house.
The trade association that represents the Turkish aluminium industry is also talking about the aluminium sector profiting from the growth of important user industries, such as the car industry, mechanical and plant engineering, the aircraft industry, electrical engineering and the packaging industry, which are continuing to have a positive impact on exports. The president of TALSAD has announced that the future per capita consumption is expected to reach 33 kg a year, which would correspond to the current average value for OECD countries. The annual production of the aluminium sector, which was 750,000 tonnes in 2007, is almost expected to increase to up to a million tonnes in future.
Messe, Veranstalter und Parallelveranstaltung
The event is being organised by
Hannover-Messe Ankiros Fuarcilik A.S.
, a subsidiary of
Deutsche Messe Hannover
. The Turkish aluminium association TALSAD (Türkiye-Alüminyum Sanayicileri Dernegi) is providing organisational support and is promoting its 4
th
Aluminium Symposium, which will deal with topics of current interest to the Turkish aluminium industry and will invite visitors to participate in discussions.
Against the background of the positive mood in Turkey and expansion in the aluminium industry, the fair is intended to provide a suitable platform for exchanging ideas and doing business; in addition, conferences and seminars will fulfil the sector’s information needs. The topics covered include technologies, plant and equipment and companies are invited to present their latest innovations and developments to a broad public and establish new relationships and partnerships or foster existing ones. Foundry products, smelting, equipment for processing and machining, and services will also be covered.
Alu-TV
®
The Alu-TV
®
team will also be at the event to report on the latest news and trends and the mood of the sector, as well as exhibiting at the fair.
One can expect exciting interviews with important representatives of the sector, reports on the presentations of individual exhibitors and groups of exhibitors, and other moving images that will capture the mood of the event. The individual companies will have the opportunity to use Alu-TV
®
and Alu-Scout
®
as a platform to present themselves and their products. Alu-TV
®
will record all the facts, trends and developments relating to the Eurasian aluminium sector and present them at
